As Stonington's First Selectman, I would like to welcome you to the Town of Stonington website.
The Town of Stonington shares an eclectic heritage with its 18,000 plus residents. Within the 42.7 square miles of the community you find a modern day blend of history, technology, and recreation. Toss in a major economic engine called tourism, place it against a scenic backdrop of sunlit, coastal waters, with plentiful wildlife, and then, surround it with similarly striving communities and businesses. Day to day, Stonington is an ideal place to have a business, build a home and make a life of it.
Stonington was incorporated when the earliest settlers to the area arrived from the Plymouth colony in 1649. Originally a trading post on the Pawcatuck River, Stonington was later claimed by Massachusetts and named Southertown. Connecticut Governor John Winthrop, Jr. obtained the charter for the Colony of Connecticut in 1662 from England which set the boundaries to include the town, and the General Court first changed the name to Mystic in 1665. In 1666, the name was changed to Stonington.
The culture of Stonington is a unique blend of sophisticated appeal and small town New England seashore charm. Conveniently situated between New York City and Boston, the town is home to many young families as well as those who have lived here for years. It is a winning combination that keeps us up to date with innovative ideas along with a respect for our historical heritage.
Please take time to look over our website and visit our town which features tree lined village streets with quaint shops and excellent restaurants. Stonington is an exciting place to be and we hope you visit to get a sense of how proud we are of it.
Sincerely,
Ed
